Gender Bashing
By Sandi Jul 18th 2008 at 9:23 pm EDT
I see it everyday in my business. Too bad Obama had to say the Annie Oakley comparison to Hillary. It made him look like an ASS. I have no respect for him.
Re: Gender Bashing
By Terry Jul 18th 2008 at 9:24 pm EDT
double standards for sure
Re: Gender Bashing
By Michelle K. Jul 18th 2008 at 9:25 pm EDT
I can't say that I respect him, either.

By MsTawiah Jul 18th 2008 at 9:27 pm EDT
I felt his comment about Annie Oakley was in reference to gun issues. Is any comparison negative?
Re: Gender Bashing
By Irlandese Jul 18th 2008 at 9:30 pm EDT
Don't EVEN get me started. I had more crap thrown my way in the last 7 months because I had the guts to HOWL about the hideous sexist portrayals in the media of Hillary, and told that I was "being too sensitive" and that "nobody likes a ball-buster". GRRRRRRR!

You are absolutely correct, it is a tool to use against women. The too sensitive tool! It has been used for hundreds of years.

Good Evening Terry
By SciBlue Jul 18th 2008 at 9:26 pm EDT
I didn't hear much outcry at all from the DNC leaders or from the male Democratic candidates regarding the sexism in the primary season. I know Senator Clinton can fight her own battles but the MSM went way over the line time after time. Few seemed to care.
Re: Good Evening Terry
By Terry Jul 18th 2008 at 9:27 pm EDT
few stood up at all

Terry, You're correct. Very few stood up. No excuse for that.

Re: where?

I missed that one. I will try to find it.
Re: where?
By Lincoln Park Dem Jul 18th 2008 at 9:31 pm EDT
that comment was not an insult...she was playing the victim and he said that. No insult there.
Re: where?
By Irlandese Jul 18th 2008 at 9:36 pm EDT
It was condescending.

Disrespectful, but living in Chicago, one of the most violent cities - I can understand your immunity to hate.

Sadly Terry, there was none. Not only is this sexist, but it brings back the memories of the "old south" which should never be forgotten, but should be learned to live with and corrected.

Not only sexism but try to invoke racial devisiveness

So...
By MsTawiah Jul 18th 2008 at 9:29 pm EDT
Is this cartoon just plain bad taste or is it sexist?
Re: So...
By Terry Jul 18th 2008 at 9:34 pm EDT
both and racist implications too
Re: So...
By Irlandese Jul 18th 2008 at 9:35 pm EDT
It's both!!! However, I am the first person to defend anyone's 1st Amendment rights. I love political cartooning. I just don't like all of their content. But if it starts meaningful dialogues, I am all for them, no matter their content.
Re: So...
By Terry Jul 18th 2008 at 9:57 pm EDT
political cartooning will always be but there was no outrage over this cartoon like recent ones and why?

?
By Lincoln Park Dem Jul 18th 2008 at 9:30 pm EDT
We see many of these from everyone to Bush all the way down the food chain. We even post them when we Bush bash. We think that is all fair....except when it hits home. We can't have it both ways. If its 'fun' and 'fair' for one than it is for all.

This was posted here right after the DNC vote on FL and MI

I am a woman, it is sexism. Trashy, and Obama was an ass.

i can see how that is offensive: did you know the artist and website are Republican?
By D. Tree Jul 18th 2008 at 11:45 pm EDT
Here's the mission of the site:

here's one of their Obama-bashing cartoons... there are many more if you want to see gross caricatures of Obama:

These guys are against everything that has to do with a Democrat, whether its Hillary or Obama.

I'll readily acknowledge that Hillar Clinton is and has been a victim of sexism in the campaign and beyond; in fact, i doubt you can be a women in America - no scratch that, the WORLD - without being oppressed by it on a daily basis.

it is a serious, and ENDEMIC problem that requires serious attention, and i would only hope to see as much progress on this front in my lifetime that i have seen on Obama's front.

and i'm willing to bet that we will see that change happen; we will make it real in our lifetimes.

i guess i had hoped to see a more in depth discussion of sexism and how cartoons like the one in the original post represent an intrinsic problem in our society, and how might we turn back the tide on it.

instead, i am saddened to see an important issue once again leveraged in personal ways.

the cartoon is from a republican, yet fully 75% of the comments here are bashing the DNC and Obama. What gives?
Re: i can see how that is offensive: did you know the artist and website are Republican?
By Terry Jul 19th 2008 at 12:09 am EDT
This was posted here right after the DNC vote on FL and MI. I do not know if you saw it then, but no outrage was made about it at all. I posted it today as it has implications of the double standards for women as compared to men and other recent satire that seemed to enrage everyone but not this one until today.
Re: i can see how that is offensive: did you know the artist and website are Republican?
By D. Tree Jul 19th 2008 at 12:40 am EDT
i agree that hillary has received the brunt of this - somehow it is still more acceptable in our society to be sexist than is is to be guilty of racism; it is more ingrained in our culture, and across the world you will find it everywhere.

i hope to see this change in my lifetime, just as i am seeing an amazing change happening with regard to race in my lifetime.

this is an exciting age to be alive, let's seize this opportunity to transform the world for the better, and not let it slip away.

peace.

created by a Republican
By Liz Jul 19th 2008 at 9:55 am EDT
Several thing about this cartoon not the least of which is that it was created by a right wing republican smear machine and as for cartoons like this, there are hundreds more and worse of Obama.

The big objection to the cartoon on the New yorker was that it was on the cover of a popular magazine. That is quite a difference from a political cartoon such as the one you link too of which, as I mentioned there are at least as many of those of Obama as there are of Hillary so she is no special victim in that lampooning.
