Press Secretary
The National Organization for Women (NOW) is seeking an energetic,
motivated, self-starter with a commitment to feminist issues to fill
the position of Press Secretary. This position is charged with
delivering NOW's message to the public through earned placement in a
wide range of media outlets. Maintaining and enhancing NOW's profile
in the media is essential.
Successful candidates will possess the following qualities:
- Experience working with national and local media, particularly
political press
- Existing contacts in print, television, radio and internet media
outlets
- Experience crafting message and developing media strategies
- Experience building and maintaining media lists
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Knowledge of women's rights issues and an unwavering commitment to
the broad range of issues NOW works on and advocates for:
reproductive rights, lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender rights, ending
racism, ending violence against women, economic equity,
constitutional equality and more รข?" progressive politics are a must!
- Works well in a fast-paced environment, ability to meet strict
deadlines under pressure
- Ability to multi-task, works well independently and on a team,
flexible
- Detail-oriented, organized, creative, innovative, pro-active,
tenacious, results-oriented
- Sense of humor, open-minded, receptive
- Non-profit or campaign experience a strong plus
Duties and responsibilities of the Press Secretary include:
- Direct and oversee day-to-day media relations for NOW
- Serve as primary media contact, respond to media inquiries and
liaison between the media and national NOW spokespeople
- Coordinate all national NOW officer media appearances
- Craft and pitch stories to reporters, producers and editors
- Maintain and cultivate relationships with members of the media
- Keep abreast of news on women's rights issues
- Identify and act on media opportunities
- Develop and execute media strategies
- Write news releases, media advisories, statements, editorials, Op-
Eds, letters to the editor, National NOW Times articles and web
content
- Conceptualize, organize and execute news conferences, media
briefings and other press events
- Promote national officers' speaking engagements and other public
appearances; provide press support for all public events
- Lead semi-regular media how-to trainings for NOW activists; advise
chapters on media relations strategies and tactics
- Track coverage of NOW in the news; present results to national
officers, staff and in written reports to the national board
- Become an integral part of the communications team, pitching in
where needed
- Participate in coalition efforts to develop media strategy on a
broad range of issues
