Stop Puppy Mills
HSUS MySpace Page | Stop Puppy Mills Website

Puppy mills are nothing new. These mass dog-breeding operations have been around for decades. They continue to thrive because they prey on unwitting consumers who are smitten by too-cute-for-words puppies in pet store windows and on fancy websites.

But behind the friendly facade of the local pet shop, the pastoral scenes on a "breeder's" website, or the neighborhood newspaper ad, there often lies a puppy mill. These canine breeding facilities house dogs in shockingly poor conditions.

Life is particularly bad for "breeding stock," dogs who live their entire lives in cages and are continually bred for years, without human companionship and with little hope of ever becoming part of a family. These dogs receive little or no veterinary care and never see a bed, a treat or a toy. After their fertility wanes, breeding animals are commonly killed, abandoned or sold to another mill. The annual result of all this breeding is hundreds of thousands of puppies, many with behavior and/or health problems.

All of these dogs are PUREBRED. Isn't that what everyone wants? No matter the cost...

PLEASE... DON'T BUY WHILE RESCUES DIE!!

I find this much harder to take than the politics and pardons, etc.

Part of defending the helpless I believe includes our pets too. I am a dog lover and this is atrocious!! I try to donate what I can each year to the Humane Society and ASPCA but it is never enough to save many of these animals. That is the sad part.

The difference between Puppymills/BYB & "Reputable" breeders
By illusion Feb 1st 2008 at 6:39 pm EST
I am a serious aniaml lover, have been all my life. I agree 100% the Puppymills AND BYB need to be shut down. However, I do not agree with the dont buy from a breeder thing. A reputable breeder NEVER sells puppy to pet stores and most have in their contract that under no circumstance can the puppy/dog EVER be sold/given or traded to a pet store, animal shelter or broker. I am a breeder...I raise & show Miniature Pinschers. I have been doing so for 13 years, in that time I have had 4 litters, #1 was 2 males, both are AKC champions and are still here with me as is their mom whom is spayed & both boys are being neutered. #2 was 1 M & 1 F, male is neutered and in a spectacular home, Female is here, never been bred and being spayed and will never leave my home. #3 was 3 boys 1 girl, 2 boys neutered, 1 boy is in a show home 1 girl is here , co-owned with another person and I am showing her. #4 was 3 girls, 1 boy, boy is in a show home, 2 girls are spayed 1 girl here being shown and will never leave my home. I am a member of the Minature Pinscher Club of America where I signed a code of ethics that I truly stand up for & beleive in as do almost 100% of all the members, that code of ethics can be read on the website. So, you see, not ALL "breeders" are bad people, we have an agenda we adhere to for the betterment of our breed. All of my dogs are born in my bedroom & move into my kitchen, they are all loved more then most people love their kids. I do feel the laws for animal cruelty are a joke and should be no different then as if the crime was against a person. However, I do not feel that anyone has the right to tell me I can not have unaltered animals or breed my dogs. This is America and we do have rights, the AR groups started out with a great idea, but I feel have and are overstepping the boundries of rights.

Don't Trust PETA
By Democrat in Houston, TX May 11th 2008 at 5:08 am EDT
I agree we should try to put an end to puppy mills. Thankfully, most of the big box pet stores, such as Petsmart and Petco, do not sell puppies here. The worst offenders are the small pet stores, and mall chains.

The mentality of puppymill owners is that of a farmer. They raise animals for profit and do not see them as any different from chickens or pigs. Most profesional breeders have different attitudes and standards.

BTW - I just wanted to inform everyone that PETA is not what you think. Their agenda is to eventually rid the world of pet animals. They consider any dog or cat, no matter how beloved and well taken care of, a slave and prisoner. To this end, some members from their national headquarters were caught "adopting" shelter animals in NC, just to kill them once they had driven a few miles down the road. This "saved" them from having to live out their lives as pets. Link
