As a veteran, I attended two events today. The first was a veterans' breakfast with men/women who served from WWII to present. The second event was with a bunch of women Marines --even one who served as one of the first female Marines during WWI! She's an old bird, but she was motivating to listen to. Nov 10, Monday, was the Marine Corps' 233rd anniversary...Marines say happy birthday every Nov 10! I'll be attending a Marine Corps Ball Saturday with many Marines who just returned from Iraq/Afghanistan. I want to acknowledge something that Marie mentioned in her last email. Today, the Woman Marines Association (local chapter) donated $350 each to two Marines who are disabled and unable to work but who have families to raise. One is a woman, the other is a man...YOUNG--23 and 24 respectively! We donated the money because they've yet to receive any of the VA benefits to which they are entitled. The paperwork process is streamlined, nevertheless it's rather time consuming. What's more, as you may know, people were fired and the VA is under investigation due to personnel destroying VA claims! Hence, some are having to resubmit documents that they don't have duplicates of! So the records have to be recreated. Tell a young man who just survived hell in Iraq, lost a leg, can't work, new father, young bride who's working 50 hours a week to make ends meet, that he'll have to wait to get the benefits he has rightfully earned! Our measly $350 will barely make a dent, but we know it's better than nothing and anticipate more disabled veterans surfacing as time presses on. Interestingly, Congressman Dennis Kucinich lost his US Army veteran sister today when she died in the VA hospital of terminal respiratory problems. He has vowed to fight for the disabled to expedite their entitlements. I guess we'll see. Still, anything you can do to sup port our veterans as they return home is greatly appreciated. I know we did a shitty job with the Vietnam vets, but we can make up for it this time!
