Change, Solutions, Leadership, 2008 Democratic Congressional Candidates

Every day hard working Kentuckians, and people across the nation, are paying the price for the failed policies of the Bush administration. While prices skyrocket and families suffer, Republicans continue to support tax breaks for the wealthiest one percent of Americans. The same failed policy continues in Iraq, and more Americans have died in Afghanistan this month, than at any other point in our military operation there.

This needs to change, this is a time that calls for leadership, and this is a time that calls for solutions.

This is why each of us should look forward to November 4th with hope. We have the opportunity; we have the power, to bring much needed change.

We have the opportunity to return two great leaders to the United States Congress, and to send them colleagues who share their vision, who share their values, and share their commitment to work for all of the people of Kentucky.

Congressman John Yarmuth has made the 3rd District, and all of Kentucky, proud. He has been a leader throughout his first term, putting the people he serves ahead of the special interests. As gas prices rose, Congressman Yarmuth sponsored HR 6251, The Responsible Federal Oil and Gas Lease Act of 2008, this measure will require big oil companies to develop the 68 million acres they are leasing, but not using, as a way to keep prices artificially high. While his opponent collects money from big oil and enriches herself with their profits, Congressman Yarmouth works towards solutions.

Sixth District Congressman Ben Chandler, has worked to provide our children with quality, safe schools. Last month, the House passed Congressman Chandler's HR 3021 with bi-partisan support. This measure called the 21st Century Green High-Performing Public School Facilities Act will authorize a vital $6.4 billion to our nation's schools for construction, modernization, renovation and repair.

We need to ensure that Congressmen Yarmuth and Chandler return to Washington to work for the people of Kentucky. We also need to send them help.

Heather Ryan, a hard working mother and United States Navy veteran, is working each day to unseat Ed Whitfield. The people of 1st District finally have the opportunity to elect a member of Congress who understands the challenges Kentucky families face, a representative who will put the people of her district ahead of the interests of the corporations who control her opponent.

State Senator David Boswell provides Democrats with the opportunity to pick up a vacant seat in the 2nd District. Senator Boswell has served Kentuckians for more than 30 years in the State House, Senate and as Agriculture Commissioner; he will bring the type of vision and leadership to the 2nd District that has been lacking for so long. This month's Survey USA poll which shows Senator Boswell with a three-point lead confirms that residents of the 2nd District are seeking positive change and real leaders.

Dr. Michael Kelley is challenging Geoff Davis in the 4th District. As a family physician, Dr. Kelley understands the flaws in our nation's healthcare system and is proposing commonsense reforms that will ensure healthcare affordability and improve healthcare delivery.

I encourage you to do your part to elect these Democratic leaders in November. Please tell your friends, family, and neighbors about the leadership, about the solutions these candidates offer. Please help us elect the leaders who will help to undo the damage of the past eight years. This November, help "Put the Blue Back in the Bluegrass State".

Gallup Daily: Preferences Unchanged in Latest Update Obama maintains 2-point advantage over McCain

PRINCETON, NJ -- The latest Gallup Poll Daily tracking update finds Barack Obama continuing to hold a slight advantage over John McCain in the presidential election trial heat, 46% to 44%

Voter preferences appear to be quite stable at this time. Since June 24-26 polling, when the candidates were even at 44%, the percentage favoring Obama has ranged from 46% to 48% while the percentage preferring McCain has varied between 42% and 44%.

Mitch McConnell last night cast the deciding vote against legislation to prevent steep cuts in Medicare reimbursement rates to physicians slated to take effect next week. Without this vital legislation, millions of seniors will be unable to easily access care as many doctors are expected to stop seeing Medicare patients. The bill McConnell blocked would have been paid for by ending costly overpayments to private insurance companies and HMOs participating in Medicare, and would have improved access to mental health services for veterans and Medicare programs for rural seniors. At least 162 organizations representing seniors, patients, physicians, and other health care companies endorsed the bill that passed the House Tuesday with an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 355-59, and last night was killed in the Senate by McConnell's single vote.

Mitch McConnell once again has chosen to stand with the HMO lobby to protect their profits rather than stand up for Kentucky's seniors. His deciding vote will have disastrous effects for seniors, veterans and doctors. It's time for all of Kentucky to send a message to Mitch McConnell; we have the opportunity in November to send Bruce Lunsford to Washington to fight for our seniors, to show true leadership and to put the interests of Kentuckians ahead of partisanship.

Since 1995, McConnell has voted to cut or voted against Medicare funding at least sixteen times. McConnell Has Received $803,057 From the Insurance Industry Since his first run for Congress, McConnell has received at least $803,057 in campaign contributions from the insurance industry. [Center for Responsive Politics]

Without a fix, 60% of doctors will stop seeing new Medicare patients.A survey shows that 60% of doctors will be forced to restrict the number of new Medicare patients they see if reimbursement rates fall 10.6% on July 1, while the nonpartisan expert Medicare Payment Advisory Commission reports that already 30% of Medicare patients looking for a new primary care physician have trouble finding one. McConnell votes against seniors to preserve overpayments to HMOs According to the nonpartisan, well-respected Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, private insurance companies in the Medicare Advantage program will be paid 113% of the average per-beneficiary cost - an extra $1,000 per patient - and their beneficiaries are healthier, and so less expensive to cover. Vote will cost Kentucky doctors $190 million in the first year and a half The American Medical Association says that the Medicare payment cuts for physician services will cost Kentucky physicians $190 million from July 2008 to December 2009 alone. [American Medical Association]

Obama or McCain?

I probably will regret this, and I am sure my email act will, but I feel it necessary. I am not dong this just for me but for my whole family and friends that feel like we are lost at this point. I have been a democrat all my life (51 now). I have worked hard for Hillary but now I find myself in the position of either voting for someone I do not trust or believe in, or voting for a republican for the first time, or not voting at all. So, I am gong to do the stupid thing. I am tired of all the media telling us what to do. I want to talk to people, know the opinions of people who have been affected by this primary season, or that have worked for one of the candidates. What I would like is the following: Why should I vote for Obama? Don't give me the because you are a democrat. Give me some good reasons to vote for him. If you voted for Hillary and switched to Obama or vs versa, then tell me what helped you make that decision. And, for those Clinton supporters...same thing. If you voted for Hillary and now will vote for Obama, please tell me why. If you refuse to vote for Obama and want me to vote for McCain or stay home, then tell me some reasons I should. When Wells tried to line up with her Illinois sisters, she was asked to go to the end of the line so as not to offend and alienate the southern women marchers. The only way to stop this mysognist and harmful messagin is to tell Time Magazine that this is unacceptable to the American people.
