7th Annual Orphan Thanksgiving - Atlanta area

Many LGBT people are left without families, either because of discrimination or distance, on Thanksgiving; the same certainly happens for one reason or another to our straight allies on this holiday. No person should ever be alone on a day specifically put aside to enjoy the company of others.

This year, Orphan Thanksgiving will be held in conjunction with the Young Democrats of Georgia and the Stonewall Caucus in order to broaden the scope and purpose of this event.

We only ask that you bring one of your favorite family dishes or cocktails to keep the party going. Turkey, stuffing and beer (as always) will be provided. We look forward to seeing you there!

Help Turnout The Youth Vote on December 2nd!

November 4th brought historic change to our country, but it left Georgia with a little extra work to do. On November 4th, several candidates did not top the state-required 50% of the vote. Tuesday, December 2nd, there will be a Runoff Election that includes several statewide races as well as dozens of local and county runoffs from around the state.

Once again, it is going to be the Youth Vote that makes the difference in which candidate will win. Natiowide, on November 4th, Young Voters came out in record numbers to support Democrats, we need to do it one more time. YOU have the power to change this election for Democrats. Here's what we, as Young Democrats, can do over the next 2 weeks.

1. Pledge-to-Vote Online at www.georgiayds.org. After you have pledged, use the forward option to send an invitation to Pledge-to-Vote Democratic on December 2nd to at least 5 of your friends. You might be the ONLY person who can talk to your friends about voting for Democrats on December 2nd. Take this opportunity now! Pledge-to-Vote and then ask your friends to pledge to vote. You can also use Myspace bulletins, facebook status and wall messages and personal text messaging as well. Use the tell-a-friend option to send your friends to www.georgiayds.org to pledge to vote today. A Message from Your President...

Fellow Young Democrats –

November 4th brought historic change to our country, and President-Elect Obama came within 3 points of winning Georgia – largely thanks to your efforts. However, we have a little extra work to do. On November 4th, several candidates did not top the state-required 50% of the vote. Tuesday, December 2nd, there will be a Runoff Election that includes several statewide races as well as dozens of local and county runoffs from around the state.

You may think that the only race on the ballot Dec 2 is the US Senate race between Jim Martin and Saxby Shameless. You'd be wrong.

The Public Service Commission is a little known but extremely important entity that regulates and sets our utility rates. The Republican in the race used to be a Democrat until he was defeated in 2002, partially because of his corrupt ties to industries he regulated. Jim Powell is one of the most qualified people to ever run for PSC, and he has fought the GOP machine in the form of Karen Handel since the primary when she tried to remove him from the ballot. The GA Supreme Court stopped her. Jim Powell needs our support to win. Your utility bills depend on Jim Powell winning this race.

The GA Court of Appeals is technically non-partisan, and the two people running have long records of voting in GOP primaries. However, Mike Sheffield of Gwinnett County is the darling of the “Christian” Taliban in this state. Unless you happen to be ultra conservative, "Christian", married, with children – you can expect a deaf ear if Sheffield is elected. Sara Doyle, while a voting Republican, is endorsed by Georgia Equality. If she promises to fairly apply justice to gay people in Georgia, she is certainly better than Sheffield.

Turnout will be KEY in this run-off to get Democrats elected rather than obstructionist Republicans trying to stop the change we voted for on November 4th. Once again, it is going to be the Youth Vote that makes the difference in which candidate will win. Sorry I did write about this before, the Obama euphoria was still alive and thriving when I heard and I have recently descended back from my previous state of mind, so here we go.

I support those seeking appeal to the ban on marriage between two people of the same sex who love each other so much they want to commit to life together.

I support the protests in California that are taking place. I would in all places California would be the LAST place to do this atrocity - since it has a strong, politically active GLBT population. For those of you in California who depend on others to motivate- from all the way in homophobic Ohio, GET YOUR ASSES IN GEAR! I want to marry in California before I even consider getting married in Connecticut or Massachusetts( no offense, I love New England fall foliage).

The time is now to act.

Change may have come to America, but the same effort we put into electing Barack Obama should be put into protesting this bill and fighting for our equal rights.

It is a change we can all believe in.

on the events of prop2 in FLorida and Prop 8 n California being defeated. with the proof that over 80% of AA's and Latinos voted for Obama and Agaignst the props we as LGBT family memebrs need to take action.

We as LGBT members Need to Hit the streets in Protest. Not ONLY vocally and organized but hit them where it will do the most hurt. thier Pocket books.
If Every LGBT memeber BOYCOTTS EVERY non LGBT Store, Restruarants, etc and NOT give them any of our Monies, If EVERY LGBT Memeber NOT show up for work for two or more Days this would hurt them just as Much.

WE need to get off of our ASSES and Organize like the AA's did in the 50's-60's. We need to tell our politicians that they WONT get our votes HANDED to them on a SILVER Platter like we have done every year. I do apologize to all my friends here because I have been busy with school, work, life, and getting Barack Obama elected I have been unable to frequent much of this board as often. But I do have to tell you something.

I can't believe the reality around me. I'm not addicted to illusion, but I cannot believe that after 8 years, democracy came back full and strong and the man i busted my ass to get in office GOT IN!!! OMG! I could not jumping up and down, screaming, shouting, smiling, crying, etc. Somebody pinch me! I partied for 3 hours with one of my friends and we couldn't help ourselves. Yesterday, because I didn't want to jinx anything( because the last election I got so wired that I fell into a two month depression after hearing about the returns) so I tried being oblivious to politics. I voted absentee, followed my own advice to combat voter suppression, and next thing I know my state is finally BLUE!!! AND BARACK OBAMA IS THE NEW PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The best part about hearing this was the gratifying experience that I helped elect him. I blogged, I talked with people, I distributed campaign literature, I phonebanked, I volunteered and attended a debate, I voted in my first presidential election, and for the first time, I feel like a citizen of these great United States of America. It's a wonderful feeling. It really is. I lived history. I helped elect the first African-American president. I feel so good I want to cry! It's finally happened!

Today, in the spirit of President Obama, I did not gloat to my Republican friends. In the past couple elections, they have gloated, which prolonged the partisan bickering. But, no, I managed to successfully put aside my desire to gloat for the sake of the betterment of this country. It feels wonderful.

All this is starting to sink in, and I can say what I learned throughout this whole campaign is many. I am a believer in progress and equality, and I am proud to have racial consciousness.

How To Stop Voter Suppression

1. If you have voted early or voted absentee, call your county Board Of Elections and make sure your vote will be counted.

2. If you plan on voting November 4th, make sure that your precinct and your voting location is running smoothly.

3. If the Board Of Elections is lying to you or you feel like they aren't being 100% honest, ask them again the previous questions of whether your vote did come in, ask if they have it on record.

4. In light of point 3, if they hesitate or deny, it helps to reference the ACLU and say ( and know) you will be taken seriously.

5. If you encounter a glitch with your voting machine, report it to your poll workers. It is their job to fix it and steer you out of it.

6. If the poll worker refuses to do their job, then, by all means, talk to their supervisor and call your county.

These points will help stop voter suppression. We let it get away with us in 2000 and 2004, and accountability must be respected and preserved for the sake of democracy.

Oh, I forgot to mention, if you know how to contact your state's electoral college, remind those who belong to it of their Constitutional duty. They seem to have forgotten about that recently.
