In the first six weeks of his tenure, the new president's to-do list will include: Restoring a sense of public confidence that the country can meet and solve the financial challenges ahead. At campaign rallies, Obama already has quoted FDR's admonition that "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." Guiding implementation of the financial industry rescue plan, including figuring out which toxic assets Treasury should buy from struggling institutions and how much to pay for them. The move to use $250 billion of the bailout to buy stakes in banks will put the government in the unfamiliar role of part owner of institutions that embody free-market capitalism. Beginning to revamp a regulatory structure largely built during the Depression so that it reflects the complexity of the current global financial system. Deciding whether and how to begin the drawdown of most U.S. combat forces from Iraq. Obama says he wants to complete the withdrawal in his first 16 months in office. McCain says a reduction is on the horizon but hasn't set a timetable. Responding to the urgent request this month by Gen. David McKiernan, the top commander in Afghanistan, for more U.S. troops there. Army Times reports that Gen. David Petraeus, who takes overall command of the region on Oct. 31, plans to deliver a report to the president in February after conducting a "top-to-bottom" review. Submitting the federal budget for fiscal 2010 to Congress in early February. It presumably will reflect the costs of the bailout plan and the revenue impact of the economic slowdown. Being prepared for terrorists to strike during the transition, a timing they have used before. This year's presidential election is among the most significant in our nation's history. The country urgently needs a visionary leader who can ensure the future of our traditional strengths in science and technology and who can harness those strengths to address many of our greatest problems: energy, disease, climate change, security, and economic competitiveness.
We are convinced that Senator Barack Obama is such a leader, and we urge you to join us in supporting hi m.
During the administration of George W. Bush, vital parts of our country's scientific enterprise have been damaged by stagnant or declining federal support. The government's scientific advisory process has been distorted by political considerations. As a result, our once dominant
position in the scientific world has been shaken and our prosperity has been placed at risk. We have lost time critical for the development of new ways to provide energy, treat disease, reverse climate change, strengthen our security, and improve our economy.
We have watched Senator Obama's approach to these issues with admiration. We espe cially applaud his emphasis during the campaign on the power of science and technology to enhance our nation's competitiveness. Read More »There are rarely more than 1....maybe 2 comments on posts here. Why? Probably because the fire seems to have gone out. I remember when there were posts with 80 or more comments! Those were times when voices were allowed to be heard, when people were allowed to express their feeling without being censored.
It would seem to me that the Bush Administration would want to actually do something RIGHT before they actually are FINALLY put out to pasture. But here we go again...give big money MORE big money while at the same time, members of their own party are calling the American people...."whiners"!
If this bailout really is the only way out of this mess, I just believe that a couple of ground rules should be required. Starting with the help that the Democrats are trying to get for the actual homeowners. But I also think that some kind of repayment should be required from the CEO's and the boards of directors at these institutions that caused and profited from this mess.
First, the government should move, maybe under the RICO laws (I obviously am not a lawyer, but I have seen Law & Order), to take possession of all assets built up by these people during the time in question.....meaning the last 6 years or so.
Second, I believe that in addition to 'bailing them out', the government should move to take control of every one of these companies until, if ever, they reach the point of complete solvancy. And in doing so, fire the boards and all corporate officers.....the same ones they have just been required to make repayment by the claiming all of their assets.
This would probably bring most, if not everyone of them, into the midst of us in the MIDDLE CLASS!
And then maybe....just maybe.....they might see the evil of their ways, and start voting DEMOCRATIC when they realize that the only American political party that gives two hoots about them NOW....is the DEMOCRATIC PARTY!

I may be the only one who had not seen this site, but I found it interesting.
Finally, the media, the American people in general and most American women specifically have finally figured out what most of us have known all along......the 'bounce' for the other ticket went up....and is now on its way down.
Most Americans have known all along that John McCain is such a bad idea and not just because of the 'new' positions he discovered right after George W. Bush pulled an early version of 'swiftboating' of him in 2000. They also are showing some concerns about his age and health. And what is making them start to have concerns about these issues? His ignorant, political choice of Sarah Palin as his VP running-mate.
They looked pretty good together, but then they started to be seen apart. She is a speaker....and he isn't. And it just MAGNIFIES HIS WEAKNESS in this area. She is fairly young.....and he isn't. And it just MAGNIFIES HIS WEAKNESS in THIS area, also.
And THEN, they realize just how empty-headed Palin is.....and how frail John McCain may really get after he takes the most pressure-filled job in the history of the world.....and how if he DIDN'T survive his first term, the most powerful person in the world would all of a sudden be....RUNNER-UP TO MISS ALASKA 1982!!!
Plus, the more we hear from her, the more she sounds like her biggest experience in life WAS her years as a beauty contest participant.
But I feel the best about this. Barack Obama has decided to handle her properly.....IGNOR HER!! Sarah Palin is a major LIGHTWEIGHT!! Why raise her up to YOUR level by acknowledging ANYTHING that she has to say?
And what is the result of this shift in campaign actions and thinking?
