THE OFFICIAL COLLEGE OUTREACH ARM OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY
WeDems' Blog
About the Author
The Voice of American Progressives, WeDems are a nationwide, progressive coalition organization focused on a permanent campaign to elect progressives at all levels of government. To build the progressive-base for Democratic politics.

21 months ago we formed a “527” Pac to use as a vehicle to fund our organization and Progressive Issues and Candidates. We had a hope that there would be some large donors step forth to contribute towards the maintenance of our programs and sites. This has not happened. For that matter neither have the small donations. There have been a few but not enough to maintain an office and pay the bills.   Read More »
On June 6th, 2008 the average price of gasoline across the nation rose to $4 per gallon. “There’s nothing worse for our economy than surging energy prices at record highs,†said Mark Zandi, Chief Economist for Moodys.com. What do Jesse James and Big Oil have in common? Nothing if you believe the legends of Jesse James, who supposedly robbed from the rich and distributed his ill gotten gains to the poor. Big Oil robs from all of us and keeps the ill gotten gains for themselves.   Read More »
Over the last three decades, we have watched as people have left the "we" lifestyle and gone to the "me" lifestyle, only to appear to be coming back around to the "we".

What do I mean? Back in the 50âs and 60âs as I was growing up, neighbors helped neighbors, families were close. I am talking of extended families. They held regular family dinners, some more than others, but they faced one another and talked, really talked about the issues of the day.   Read More »
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, in his role as President Bush's number one "Yes Man", reminds me of the Nazi generals during their trials in Europe after World War II, when their number one answer was "I was following orders."

This is crap; Gonzales has consistently twisted the law to fit Bush's interpretation or at least his wishes. He has created paths for torture and detention that are a violation of our nations laws; he has acted like the law and the Constitution are not enforceable on this President and his cohorts.   Read More »
Hey WeDems need your help TODAY,

I just called all 8 democratic members of the House Judiciary subcommittee on Civil Rights and the Constitution... who are holding hearings starting on the 7th into civil rights erosion, privacy intrusions from the Patriot Act etcetera and asked them if the various congressmen could include, weather the federal government should be tracking every prescription written in this country? They all we're very friendly, said they would pass my question along to the congressman or woman (there is one), but it always helps if they hear it from more than one person. This bill removes the privacy between Doctor and Patient, we have to move fast Please Call NOW!   Read More »
For a second time, Congress is arguing over a supplemental funding bill for the G.W. Bush War in Iraq. As you all know by now, Congress set a new course for the war in Iraq. It provided a way forward for the Iraqi people, and laid a path to bring our Troops home. Sure it had riders on it to provide funding for some of the pressing problems faced in this country.

But the idiot we have in the Whitehouse chose to veto the Iraq spending bill. Why? His stupid pride was hurt.

This president has a revenge-obsession with Iraq and continues to play like the three monkeys or at least two, he closes his eyes and covers his ears to the truth of this occupation. He could give a damn about the U.S. troops who have died in Iraq, a number approaching 3,400 men and women, not to mention the deaths tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis. The farce of a president has thrown away over $427 billion of taxpayers hard earned money in Iraq, a vast amount of it has been stolen by unscrupulous U.S. contractors. This is $1423.00 for every man, woman and child in this country.   Read More »
Thomas Jefferson used the above phrase in his second inaugural address. But the question is: How should citizens in a modern pluralist democracy debate and discuss public affairs?

We should not censor public debate about politics, at least not without very good reason. But when it comes to a related question of political morality - "To what ideal should citizens aspire in political debate?" - the issue is cloudy. For example, some have argued that religious reason should be excluded from public debate; others argue for the exclusion of statements that degrade people on the basis of their religion, race or ethnicity.

Others argue that in public debate, an ideal of political morality should mirror the freedom of expression: all viewpoints should contend in a marketplace of ideas.   Read More »
Fund Raising is a necessary evil in this day and age, but what about the issues? Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats, with the exception of John Edwards, are talking about the issues.

Obamas impressive first quarter fund raising report, has caused quite a stir. $25 million, and 100,000 donors is a great start. Clinton herself is no schlep. She raised $26 million from 50,000 donors.

The problem as I see it is that Clinton has taken donations for the primary that she thought was hers for the taking, and the general election at the same time. This I think will reduce her available funds for the primary, maybe that is why she kicked in $10 million from her Senatorial war chest. While Obama who did feel that he had the primary sewed up has the advantage at this point, he will have to continue this pace in the succeeding quarters to prove his viability as a front runner while worrying about raising funds for the General Election if he is the nominee.   Read More »
The elections of 2006, is being heralded across the world as a great Democratic victory. Hundreds of thousands of Democrats large and small have worn themselves out patting themselves on the back. Shucks even pseudo democrats are doing it too.

We Won! Screams Dem leaders, the people have spoken. Maybe, but I am finding as I talk to people around the country and in other countries, that perhaps it is an illusion.

I know you are saying, Ron you are nuts, we won didnât we?   Read More »
We must resolve that we have had enough (remember our cry during the election), that we are not going to take it lying down any longer.

Six long years end, as we begin a run of the last two years of the Bush administration. An administration rote with abuse, corruption and intimidation.

Most of the American people have set back and watched as Bush and his cohorts have did their best to tear up the Constitution, leaving it frayed and bruised. Set back and watched as Diebold has disenfranchised their vote. Set back as our elected Representatives in Congress have been corrupted, and intimidated into allowing this destruction of our Constitution.   Read More »
For far too long, incumbents and prolific fundraisers have held an overwhelming advantage in any election. Grassroots candidates usually don't stand much of a chance, as they don't get to use the trappings of office to spread their messages for free, and they usually don't have the money to wage a viable campaign. Money is playing an increasingly important role in politics today.

We need a Clean Elections bill or publicly funded elections that will level the playing field for qualified candidates to run for office without having to worry about wealth or political connections.

Clean Elections are about we the voters not the big campaign donors. Lets force candidates to spend their time talking about the issues and not waste time dialing for dollars.   Read More »
The Constitution is a living document. It is also our most precious historical document. All that America is and all that it will be is grounded in this document. But regardless of how precious it is there comes times when it must be amended to reflect the progress made in a more modern world.

We should interpret the Constitution as it fits our world today, but we must not take it to extremes. I would suggest that for abortion, gay marriage and gay rights, that there should be amendments. But as to privacy, we should let the Supreme Court hash it out and then we can rely on precedents. I believe that this mixing of the two would make this the living document that our founding fathers wanted it to be.

I would like to see amendments voted on during presidential elections by We The People, a return to Democracy if you will.

Today’s “interest-group democracy” contributes to the proliferation of phony "rights." When "rights" become merely legal claims attached to interests and preferences, the stage is set for political and social conflict. Interests and preferences may conflict, but rights cannot. There can be no conflict of genuine human rights in a free society.   Read More »
Tom Hughes of DFA recently sent out a letter asking for direction on DFAs lobbying of Congress.

The subject line suggested that my answers would be known as the McBride Doctrine perhaps a play to get a better response, as I am sure there are a lot of people with egos who jumped at the chance to have the DFA policy be known as their doctrine It wont happen that way folks.
He said,
March 19 will mark the beginning of a fourth year of war in Iraq with no sign of when our troops will come home. In the last election, we told Congress to change the course. Now, we need to tell them how.
(Tom, itâs the start of the fifth year not the fourth)   Read More »
I started this thinking of an article for a military blog, since we are parents of a soldier in Iraq. But as it progressed it grew in to a bit more than I had planned.

From the news media, we learned that there were casualties in our sonâs unit. Unless you are a parent or spouse or child of a soldier at war, you can not know what it is to hear those chilling words from an electronic box.   Read More »
Recently I spoke to an organizer in California who told me about the numerous groups she has organized in the last 5 years, she served as President of the local Democratic Women Organization, organized several ward clubs, organized her County Democrats' Activist Conference, she has been instrumental in helping Dems on most of the school boards, city councils, water boards, hospital boards, etc, in her county.

This lady has setup a roundtable discussion with several leaders from faith communities, to attempt to bring them into the Democratic camp, and away from the neocons. And last she is organizing a committee within the black community to contact and convince the Democrats there to register permanent absentee.   Read More »
Since day one, we have, for the most part; all assumed that it was the Vice Presidents office that leaked the information about Valarie Plame, violating the federal law that bars the "outing" of intelligence operatives.

Vice President Dick Cheney wrote a memo that effectively confirms his intimate involvement in strategizing about how to counter the inquiry into the Bush administration's politically motivated outing of CIA operative Valarie Plame. This was revealed in the former vice presidential chief of staff "Scooter" Libby's trial on charges of obstructing a federal investigation.   Read More »
We, the people of the United States, makes a profound statement doesn’t it. This is why we chose WE! The People, as our name for this new webzine.

I remember the outrage I felt when I heard the following: [The Constitution of the United States of America = "...just another piece of paper" -- gw bush (02.18.2000)]

The above remarks from our at that time new President to be, struck me as talk of a fool, and the last six years are no exception to my first impression.   Read More »
If only we could grade our elected officials, and then adjust their pay and term in office based on those grades, George W. Bush would be a dropout!   Read More »
Dear Ron,

Unacceptable. A rapid escalation of troops is just simply unacceptable. About five months ago, we put more troops in Baghdad and unfortunately, attacks increased and a record number of Americans and Iraqis were killed. President Bush's "new strategy" just demonstrates his plans to once again ignore the will of the people, the advice of his commanders, the Baker-Hamilton commission, and even some in his own party.

On November 7, American voters delivered a powerful message to President Bush that they wanted a new direction in Iraq. As the nation watched President Bush's speech, it became clear that he chose to once again ignore their call for change.   Read More »
How one person operating at the local level can have a national impact!

Several years ago, we discovered that our state's pollution ranked very high, that there were toxins in the air and water that were affecting our health; moreover the burning of fossil fuels to create power and the effluents of upstream manufacturing plants were turning our "paradise" into a living hell.

To make matters worse, the County officials in our State decided policy virtually on their own without checks and balances.   Read More »
